F.L.Y Will – The Substance Prefix
Warning, strong language! Here’s some hip hope that is sure to get your mother really mad.
F.L.Y Will uses a wide range of tones and sounds as backdrops for his dense and purposeful flow. From the opening ‘Intro’, the rhymes are tightly knitted around a moody wash of pads and a rippling beat, shifting into the dubstep tinged ‘No One New’, an incessant barrage of expletives and attitude. The track’s underbelly features a bouncy deep bass throb while the rap sits atop it all, spiky and sneering all the way through. ‘Sherane (Poison, Danger)’ honks and parps its way through its intro before settling on a steady bassline and a wonkily effected drum section that creates an unsettling atmosphere, which feels appropriate to F.L.Y Will’s style and tone. ‘Chiraq’ is strong in its confidence, with deep and dark elements that create an aggressive feel, while ‘Nostalgia Freestyle’ is perfectly titled with its squealing samples and laid back beat. The Substance Prefix is a mixtape that does well to showcase F.L.Y Will’s abilities – while his style is unlikely to be to everyone’s taste, as an artist he has put together a consistent and coherent collection that is sure to be a worthwhile addition to many hip hop collections out there.
