Interview – Lizzy Small
Having successfully funded her music video through Kickstarter, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Small is a rising star who packs a powerful pop punch. We ran through a few questions with her to get to know her a little bit better.
We already know you’re a great singer, but are there any interesting facts about you that hardly anyone else knows?
Some interesting facts about myself is that I’m the youngest of four sisters and I am
How did you get started as a musician?
I started as a musician at a young age. I grew up dancing in my living room, at
Mexican restaurants and performing anywhere I could get the chance to. I took
piano and singing lessons as a kid and I was always in my school choir or chorus
growing up. Doing musical theatre and dance as a child, really pushed me into my
music career. I became fascinated with the guitar, piano, lyrics, drums–anything that
was a beat. I couldn’t get enough so I never stopped singing and I still do sing every
day–even if its in the shower.
Who are your biggest influences – why do they get you so pumped?
The biggest influence in my life is definitely my family. Whether it be as an artist or a
friend, sister, daughter, etc. my family makes me who I am and they fuel my desire
to reach higher and higher. I am extremely close with my three older sisters Jennifer,
Lindsay and Rebecca, and their opinions, ideas, personal accomplishments and
hilarious life outlooks truly urge me to continue doing what I love every day. Knowing
I have them there for me literally 24 hours of the day, pumps me up beyond belief. I
strive to make my family proud and we all work as a team.
What is your proudest achievement so far?
I honestly can’t say that I have one thing I’m most proud of. The biggest risk I’ve
taken so far is writing my own EP and deciding to go for it and make my own music
video. It was an exciting, scary and challenging process. This was the first project I
was truly in charge of—I held the reins. It was wild and crazy and I’m still so
pleasantly surprised it all came together! And secondly, my biggest accomplishment
is maintaining a rigorous academic lifestyle while pursuing my career. It isn’t
something most people my age do, and I couldn’t be more thankful for my academic
career and accomplishments that have only contributed to my professional career.
You successfully funded your EP on Kickstarter, how was the whole experience for you?
I successfully funded my whole music video on Kickstarter yes! The experience was
absolutely surreal. I never thought I would create my own Kickstarter campaign, let
alone see it come to life. What I found to be most amazing about this experience,
was the tremendous support I gained from people I was only acquainted with, or
even complete strangers! I gained fans from Romania, other parts of Europe, and
truly all over the world. It was so magical and encouraging to get messages and
backer updates from people who didn’t even know me but who truly believed in me.
It’s unlike anything else when people who you’ve never even met have such large
respect for you and what you love doing most.
What has been your biggest challenge, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was probably learning how to create and maintain a solid
team. Leading my career is up to me, but it does take a village. It’s sometimes
difficult to find the right people to work with, or who you mesh well with and this is
something crucial to a career of longevity. Building my team overall and specifically
for my music video was a wonderful adventure and I definitely have learned a lot,
and still am.
Tell us more about the story behind the song ‘Gravity’.
All my songs are written about things that come from my personal life. Gravity is a
word that encapsulates the entire vibe of my EP. Gravity as a single deals with the
idea of being drawn to that one person that no matter where you are or what you’re
doing, you feel such a strong connection to them and feel in essence a “gravitational
pull” toward them. It’s that person that even if you’re in a crowd full of people, the
only person you can see is them and everyone else around you becomes a blur.
What plans do you have coming up next?
My plans are to continue to push my music and take the next step toward building a
team behind my music. I also plan to continue my acting work after promoting
the upcoming movie I’m in “Spare Parts” which releases in theaters January 16th.
How can we stay up to date with what you’re up to?
